Grove City tops Thiel, 8-2

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved closer to the .500 mark Friday afternoon by earning an 8-2 home victory over visiting Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at College Field. Grove City is now 15-16 overall and 5-11 in the PAC. The Wolverines have won three straight.

Junior Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) improved to 5-3 on the season by allowing one run over seven innings. Bowser scattered 11 hits and worked out of several jams as Thiel stranded 18 runners in the game. Senior Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate). Grove City extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) singled home senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison). An error allowed junior DH Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) to score.

The Wolverines broke the game open in the eighth as Moran blasted a two-run homer and sophomore DH Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled in sophomore left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak).

Bartkowiak, Pierrot and Schwamberger all singled twice in the win. Bartkowiak also scored three runs.

Grove City's faint hopes of reaching next weekend's PAC Championship Tournament evaporated Friday, however, as Westminster earned a 6-2 win over Bethany. Grove City needed Bethany to sweep Westminster in order to have a chance at the fourth and final spot in the tournament. Thiel (24-13, 9-7) is the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

Grove City will wrap up PAC play Saturday with a doubleheader at Thiel, starting at 1 p.m.
