Wolverines fall to 2-2 in PAC

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 2-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday afternoon as host Thiel swept the Wolverines in a PAC doubleheader at Tomcat Park. Thiel picked up a 16-4 win in the opener, then rallied for a 10-9 win in the second game.

Grove City (5-5 overall) fell behind 6-0 in the third inning of the opener despite collecting 11 hits. Senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) homered and scored a pair of runs as part of a 3-for-4 day. Senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) homered and singled while junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) doubled and singled.

Freshmen Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and Adam Zimmerman (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) both doubled.

Sophomore Michael Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) took the defeat for Grove City, allowing six runs in two-plus innings.

Grove City led 9-7 entering the bottom of the ninth in Game Two but Thiel rallied for three runs with two outs. The Wolverines used a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Junior left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) cracked a two-run double and senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) followed with a two-run single during the inning.

Thiel eventually grabbed a 7-6 lead but Grove City reclaimed the lead, 9-7, in the eight on Brian Moran's two-run single.

Junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) scored three runs for Grove City, which had just five hits in the second game. The Wolverines did walk 11 times in the game, however.

Senior reliever Jon Coyne (Solon, Ohio/Solon) absorbed the loss for Grove City. He allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Junior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and pitched 4 2/3 innings. Hillegas struck out eight and allowed three earned runs. Sophomore Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City will host Hiram Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
