Wolverines take two from Oberlin

LORAIN, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 7-8 overall Tuesday night by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Oberlin at the Lorain Pipe Yard. Grove City rolled to a 15-1 win in the opener, then completed the sweep with a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Chris Bowser did not allow an earned run in six innings of work during the opener. Bowser allowed just five hits and struck out seven.

Offensively, Grove City racked up 13 hits in Game One as five Wolverines posted multi-hit games. Senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) went 3 for 4 while senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) doubled, singled and drove in three runs.

Senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian), freshman right fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and sophomore third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) all singled twice. Freshman shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled. Brian Moran and Mertz both scored three runs each.

Grove City scored in each of the first six innings and led 10-0 entering the bottom of the fourth. Kriger's two-run single in the first highlighted a four-run outburst. Mertz cracked a two-run double in the second while Scriven drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single.

Freshman J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) pitched a scoreless seventh for Grove City.

In Game Two, Grove City broke open a 4-2 game with five runs in the top of the seventh. Scriven and Kriger helped key the rally by opening the inning with back-to-back singles.

Brian Moran tripled and singled while Scott Moran doubled, singled and scored three runs in the victory. Pierrot drove in a pair of runs, also.

Junior reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of work. Tindall allowed two unearned runs and two hits in relief of freshman starter Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette). Klimek pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings. Seelman and senior closer Jon Coyne (Solon, Ohio/Solon) each tossed one scoreless inning of relief.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Saturday at noon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
