Grove City gains split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team is 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after splitting a doubleheader against PAC foe Waynesburg Saturday afternoon at College Field. Grove City dropped an 11-10 decision in the opener but rallied late for an 11-4 victory in Game Two.

Grove City (8-9 overall) trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap but senior center field Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) belted a grand slam that gave Grove City the lead for good. Later in the inning, junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) roped a two-run double to break the game open.

Six Grove City players posted multi-hit outings in the nightcap as the Wolverines accumulated 18 hits. Moran went 3 for 5 with five runs batted in while Stombaugh went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles. Junior left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) doubled, singled and scored a pair of runs. Sophomore third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) and freshman right fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both singled twice.

Sophomore reliever Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win after throwing three perfect innings out of the bullpen. Freshman starter Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) allowed four runs in six innings.

Grove City led 8-3 entering the top of the eighth in the opener but could not protect the lead. Waynesburg (14-15) scored five times in the eighth to tie the game, then scored three more runs in the ninth. Grove City closed the lead to 11-10 in the ninth on a Moran homer and a run-scoring single from Stombaugh. However, the Wolverines could not force extra innings.

Kriger homered while Moran also doubled as part of his 3-for-5 outing. Scriven and Thompson both doubled and singled while Stombaugh went 2 for 5. Grove City amassed 15 hits in the opener.

Junior reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) took the defeat after allowing three unearned runs. Junior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and allowed just one earned run in six-plus innings. Herringshaw and senior Jon Coyne (Solon, Ohio/Solon) each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Grove City will play a non-conference game at Case Western Reserve Tuesday at 4 p.m.
