Case nips Grove City, 4-3

CLEVELAND -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision at Case Western Reserve Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Nobby's Ballpark.

Grove City (8-10) trailed 4-0 entering the seventh but cut the lead in half with a pair of runs. Senior center field Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) opened the seventh with a solo homer. Later in the inning, junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled and then scored on a triple from freshman right fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour).

Kriger added an RBI-groundout in the ninth that scored freshman pinch runner Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian). However, Grove City could not force extra innings.

Senior Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) started and pitched four innings for Grove City. Bowser struck out five and allowed just two earned runs but received the setback. Sophomore Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) pitched four innings of relief and yielded one unearned run.

Senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) added a double for the Wolverines. Case Western pitchers Kevin Haley and Kale Aron held Grove City to seven hits.

Grove City will host Lake Erie Friday afternoon in a non-conference game.
