Grove City holds off Lake Erie, 12-10

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior DH Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) went 4 for 4 with three doubles and four runs batted in while senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) belted his second grand slam of the week to help lead Grove City to a 12-10 win over visiting Lake Erie in non-conference baseball action at College Field Friday afternoon.

Moran's grand slam gave Grove City (9-10 overall) an 11-5 lead in the sixth inning. Grove City led 12-6 entering the ninth inning but had to withstand Lake Erie's two-out rally. The Storm (9-20) placed the tying run on base but freshman reliever Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) recorded his first collegiate save by retiring Ben Reed to end the game.

Grove City amassed 16 hits in the win. Freshman third baseman Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) went 2 for 3, walked twice and scored a career-high five runs. Junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled and singled in three at-bats while junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) singled twice.

Brian Moran added a single to his grand slam and finished with five runs batted in. Senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) also drove in a pair of runs.

Sophomore reliever Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) recorded the final out of the fifth inning and received credit for the victory. Junior starter Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Wolverines. Hillegas struck out five and walked two.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 12 p.m. in a pivotal Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
