Wolverines split with Pitt-Greensburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded the home portion of the 2008 schedule Wednesday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Pitt-Greensburg at College Field. Grove City fell in the opener, 7-4, but rallied for a 10-9, 9-inning win in the nightcap.

Grove City (15-14) trailed 8-5 entering the bottom of the seventh in Game Two but charged back to force extra innings. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) belted a two-run homer with one out that pulled Grove City to within 8-7. Two batters later, junior left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) tied the game with a solo homer to right field.

Pitt-Greensburg's Chad Hoffner led off the eighth inning with a solo home run but Grove City tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Grove City then won the game in the bottom of the ninth as senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) singled, stole second and scored on a single from freshman catcher Adam Zimmerman (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell).

Grove City scored in each of the last seven innings of the game. The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) doubled in freshman Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian). Pitt-Greensburg took a 3-1 lead in the fourth but Grove City quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as freshman right fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled in Pierrot. Kriger scored the tying run on a Seth Thompson single.

Seth Thompson also doubled as part of a 3-for-5 outing while Mertz doubled twice. Brian Moran and freshman Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) both singled twice, as did junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis).

Senior pitcher Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) earned the wins with two innings of relief. Bowser fanned five of the seven batters he faced. Freshman Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) started and allowed three runs in four innings.

Grove City managed just five hits in the opener as Pitt-Greensburg jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second innings. Tyler Thompson and Scott Moran both doubled for Grove City. Sophomore pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fell to 5-5 on the season after allowing six runs in three innings. Junior reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) allowed one run in two innings while freshman Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) tossed two scoreless innings.

Grove City will conclude the 2008 regular season Saturday with a doubleheader at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More at noon.
