Wolverines topple Thomas More in PAC Tournament
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Sophomore pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a complete game while senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) went 3 for 4 with a homer to help lift the Grove City College baseball team to a 7-3 victory over top-seeded Thomas More Friday in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
Grove City, the No. 4 seed, will now play in the winner's bracket final Saturday at 9 a.m. Saturday's Tournament games will be played at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium.
Grove City (16-16) took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth as junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) doubled in senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) to ignite a three-run rally. Wilson later scored on an error while junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) came home on a sacrifice fly from freshman DH Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour).
The Wolverines then extended the lead to 5-2 in the fifth as Moran homered to left field.
Grove City tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth as Pierrot and senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both put down successful squeeze bunts.
Junior left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) collected three hits and scored twice for the Wolverines. Thompson singled and then scored on a Moran single in the first inning to give Grove City a quick 1-0 lead. Mertz and Stombaugh both had a pair of singles.
Herringshaw improved to 6-5 on the season after scattering 10 hits in nine innings. He struck out one and walked three.
Grove City is now 16-10 all-time in the PAC Tournament under head coach Rob Skaricich. The Wolverines are in pursuit of their first PAC title since 2002.
