Wolverines earn split with Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team went 1-1 in its first Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader of the 2009 season Saturday as the Wolverines split a pair of games with visiting Westminster at College.
Westminster won the opener 2-0 but Grove City rebounded for an 8-7 victory in eight innings.
In the nightcap, freshman catcher Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) scored on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the eighth to break a 7-7 tie. McCoy reached on an error earlier in the inning and moved to third on an infield single by senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak).
Grove City fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) belted a three-run double.
The Wolverines then took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third as senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) singled in sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian). Wilson then came home on a double from sophomore DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).
Wilson extended Grove City's lead to 7-4 in the fourth with a two-run double. However, Westminster (5-10, 2-1 PAC) tied the game with a three-run fifth inning.
Kriger also tripled while Magister added a second double. Moran scored three times.
Senior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) earned the win in relief after striking out two in one inning of work. Sophomore Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started for the Wolverines and allowed seven runs in five innings. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) pitched two scoreless innings before Hillegas came on in the eighth.
In the opener, sophomore pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) fired a complete game for Grove City. Metcalf allowed just two runs and six hits over seven innings. He struck out three.
Westminster's John Izzo broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to left field. Grove City had just two hits.
The Wolverines (3-6, 1-2 PAC) will host Saint Vincent Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at College Field.
