Grove City sweeps Saint Vincent

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team picked up a pair of wins Tuesday afternoon by sweeping fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference member Saint Vincent in a doubleheader at College Field. Grove City earned a 5-1 win in the opener, then secured a 6-5 victory in the second game.

In the opener, senior pitcher Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before yielding a pair of hits. Hillegas allowed one run in six innings to pick up the victory. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.

Senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) paced Grove City offensively by going 3 for 3 with two doubles. Senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) also doubled twice in the win while senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) went 3 for 3 and scored twice. Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) drove in a pair of runs.

In Game Two, Koontz gave Grove City its third straight victory by singling in sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). Kriger started Grove City's rally in the bottom of the seventh by singling. Stombaugh followed with a line-drive single to right, which sent Kriger to third.

Junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win in relief for the Wolverines. Herringshaw allowed one run and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Sophomore Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and allowed three earned runs in three innings. Classmate Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) followed with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Moran and Koontz both had two hits each in the nightcap while senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) doubled. Moran and Thompson both scored twice.

Tuesday's games do not count in the PAC standings due to Saint Vincent's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Friday afternoon in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Grove City will then play Waynesburg in a single 9-inning game in Morgantown, W. Va. Saturday.
