Grove City falls 13-10

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 6-8 overall Tuesday afternoon with a 13-10 setback against host Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Grove City pounded out 13 hits, including six extra-base hits. However, the Wolverines committed five errors which led to seven unearned runs. Grove City pitchers also walked seven batters.

Grove City fell behind 8-1 early but eventually tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the sixth. Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) both belted run-scoring doubles in Grove City's two-run sixth inning.

Saint Vincent reclaimed the lead with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth.

Koontz also stroked a two-run double to highlight Grove City's four-run third inning. Magister finished the afternoon 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs driven in while sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled as part of a 3-for-4 afternoon.

Senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) tripled while senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) each had two hits.

Senior reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) took the defeat for Grove City after allowing four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Senior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and allowed six runs (one earned). Sophomore Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and junior Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) also pitched in relief. Herringshaw threw two scoreless innings.

Grove City will host D'Youville Thursday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
