Grove City falls to Case

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 8-10 overall Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Case Western Reserve at College Field. Case earned a 21-17 win in the opener. The Spartans then topped Grove City in the nightcap 13-8.

Case Western (8-19) took control of the opener by scoring 13 runs in the top of the second inning. Case eventually extended the lead to 20-4 before Grove City charged back. Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) roped a two-run triple to highlight Grove City's six-run fourth inning while freshman catcher Marcus Chakot (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both had run-scoring doubles.

Kriger also belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, helping Grove City close to within 21-17. However, Case snuffed out Grove City's comeback hopes.

In Game Two, Tyler Thompson went 2 for 2 with a home run and four runs batted in but the Wolverines could not overcome an early 4-0 deficit. Sophomore pitcher Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched 4 2/3 innings. Silk allowed eight earned runs and absorbed the defeat. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) and sophomore Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) both pitched in relief.
