Wolverines split at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a doubleheader with host Geneva Thursday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. Grove City (9-11 overall) rolled to a 21-9 win in the opener. Geneva won the nightcap 13-3.

In Game One, senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) helped lead Grove City's 17-hit attack with a pair of homers, four runs scored and five runs batted in. Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) homered, scored three times and drove in three runs while senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) went 3 for 4 with four runs scored.

Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) collected three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs while sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) both singled twice.

In all, seven Grove City players scored at least twice while six had multi-hit games.

Junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned the win after pitching 5 2/3 innings. Herringshaw allowed seven earned runs and 10 hits. Sophomore Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Metcalf fanned three.

Wilson put Grove City ahead early with a three-run homer in the first inning. His two-run blast in the seventh inning highlighted Grove City's six-run outburst. Moran added a two-run single in the seventh inning.

In the nightcap, Magister led off the second inning with his sixth home run of the season. Magister also singled while Patterson posted a 3-for-3 effort, including a double.

However, Geneva scored in five of its six at-bats. The Golden Tornadoes sealed the win with two runs in the fifth and six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sophomore Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and pitched 3 1/3 innings for Grove City. Silk allowed three earned runs but took the defeat. He fanned five and allowed five hits.

Senior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport), senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) and sophomore Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) all pitched in relief for Grove City.

Thursday's games do not count in the PAC standings due to Geneva's provisional status in NCAA Division III. Grove City will face Waynesburg April 15 in PAC action.
