Thiel tops Wolverines

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 4-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon with a 14-10 setback at Thiel in PAC action at Tomcat Park.

Grove City, the designated home team for the game, held an 8-4 lead entering the top of the eighth but Thiel (22-11, 12-6 PAC) seized the lead with a 10-run eighth inning. Grove City cut the lead to 14-10 in the bottom of the eighth as senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) stroked a run-scoring single and sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) hit a sacrifice fly.

The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) led off the first with a homer while Magister belted a two-run home run in the third to give Grove City a 4-2 lead. Junior DH Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) followed with a solo homer.

In the fifth, Seth Thompson extended Grove City's lead to 8-4 with a two-run triple that drove in sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Seth Thompson finished 3 for 4 while Stombaugh went 3 for 5.

Wilson doubled as part of a 4-for-5 outing while Patterson, sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) all had two hits. Grove City finished with 18 hits.

Junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley), sophomore Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) all pitched in relief. Seelman pitched a perfect ninth.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
