Wolverines top Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team remained alive for a berth in the season-ending Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by picking up a 24-5 win over host Waynesburg Monday afternoon at Madison Park. Grove City is now 6-9 in the PAC and 13-17 overall. Waynesburg, which is in fourth place in the PAC, falls to 8-7 in the conference and 17-17 overall.
Grove City broke Monday's game open with a 10-run fifth inning. Senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) helped ignite the inning with a two-run single while sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) capped the outburst with a three-run double.
The Wolverines stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) roped a two-run double and junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) followed with a two-run single.
Grove City collected 20 hits in the win, including five doubles. In addition to Patterson and Stombaugh, senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall), sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and sophomore center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) all doubled. Patterson finished 3 for 7 with three runs scored while sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 6 with four runs scored and three runs knocked in. Scriven also collected three hits.
Koontz, Kriger, Stombaugh and Wilson all had two hits each while Quirk scored three times. Stombaugh drove in four runs.
Junior Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the pitching victory after allowing four runs in six innings. He struck out three and permitted nine hits. Sophomore Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) pitched the final three innings to notch his first collegiate save. Smith allowed one run and two hits.
Grove City will host Bethany Friday afternoon in a single 9-inning PAC game at 3 p.m. The Wolverines will then play a doubleheader at Bethany Saturday. Grove City can earn the fourth and final berth in the PAC Tournament by sweeping Bethany and having Waynesburg lose two of three games to Washington & Jefferson. Grove City can also clinch the berth by winning two of three games against Bethany if Waynesburg goes 0-3 against W&J. Grove City has a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Waynesburg this season and would win a two-team tie-breaker with the Yellow Jackets. The Wolverines are the defending conference champion.
