Grove City wins 6th straight

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team wrapped up the 2009 regular season Tuesday afternoon with a 13-5 victory over visiting Geneva (22-16) in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members at College Field. It is Grove City's sixth straight win.

Grove City bolted to a 7-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. Senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) roped a two-run single in the second to help give the Wolverines (17-17) a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, sophomore center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) tripled and scored on a wild pitch while junior Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) added a run-scoring single.

Geneva eventually pulled to within 10-5 in the eighth but the Wolverines countered with three more runs. Freshman outfielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) tripled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth to help seal the win.

Quirk and sophomore DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) both had three hits for the Wolverines. Quirk scored four runs while Magister knocked in three runs. Sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) tripled while junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) went 2 for 3. Grove City finished with 14 hits.

Six pitchers saw action for the Wolverines in predetermined order Tuesday. Sophomore Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) pitched the first two innings and allowed just one hit to receive the win. Sophomore Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and freshman Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) each followed with a scoreless inning.

Sophomore Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) allowed two earned runs in two innings while classmate Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) allowed one run in two innings. Sophomore J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) pitched a perfect ninth.

Grove City will return to action Thursday at Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at 3 p.m. Grove City is the No. 4 seed while W&J is the top seed. The Wolverines are the defending PAC champion.
