Wolverines improve to 5-1 in PAC

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team pounded out 21 hits -- including nine for extra bases -- Monday afternoon en route to a 19-4 victory over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at R. Jack Behringer Field. Grove City is now 5-1 in the conference and 11-8 overall. Grove City has won eight of its last nine games.

Junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) paced Grove City's attack by going 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and five runs batted in. Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) homered and drove in four runs as part of a 3-for-4 effort while junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled twice and scored three runs while going 5 for 6.

Junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) tripled and doubled while freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) collected three hits.

Patterson put Grove City up 3-0 in the first inning with a three-run homer. Kriger added a run-scoring double later in the inning. He later scored the fifth run of the inning on an error.

The Wolverines pushed the lead to 7-0 in the second inning as Patterson doubled in Moran and Thompson followed later with a run-scoring single.

Junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) roped a run-scoring single in the fourth inning as Grove City extended the lead to 10-2. Thompson led off the sixth inning with a home run and the Wolverines then sealed the win with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the seventh, Grove City took advantage of five walks, a hit batsman and an error.

Sophomore right fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also tripled for Grove City, which is 3-0 at home this year.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) improved to 5-1 on the season by pitching seven innings. He yielded three runs and six innings while walking none. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pitched the eighth inning and junior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) allowed a run in the ninth.

Westminster dropped to 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

Grove City will visit Allegheny Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
