Grove City falls on road

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 12-11 overall Monday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped a 12-11 decision to host Geneva at 33rd Street Field in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members. Geneva scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.

Grove City collected 13 hits in the game, including a 3-for-5 outing from junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian). Moran homered, doubled and scored four runs for the Wolverines while junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) doubled and singled. Junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) also collected a pair of hits.

Junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) roped a triple and freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled in a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Kriger and senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) both had run-scoring singles in the first inning to help the Wolverines take an early 3-0 lead. Patterson tripled and scored in the third and in the fourth inning, Moran and Butler both doubled to give Grove City a 7-2 lead.

Moran pushed Grove City's lead to 10-5 in the seventh with a two-run homer, his first of the season. Geneva cut the lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh but Grove City answered as junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) singled in junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Freshman pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and pitched five innings for the Wolverines. He allowed three runs and four hits while striking out one. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), junior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian), junior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) and junior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) all pitched in relief.  Hasek took the defeat after allowing two earned runs in two-plus innings.

Monday's game does not count in the league standings due to Geneva's provisional membership status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will host Thiel Tuesday in a PAC doubleheader at R. Jack Behringer Field starting at 1 p.m.
