Grove City drops pair

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 7-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Friday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to visiting Thomas More at R. Jack Behringer Field. Thomas More (20-11, 8-2 PAC) won the opener 15-1. The Saints then pulled out a 10-6 win in Game Two.

In Game Two, Grove City fell behind 4-0 early but eventually took a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning as junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) walked and later scored on a single from junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Grove City had forged a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run from junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Thomas More tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth on Nick Zeiser's run-scoring triple. In the sixth, Sam Schmeltzer launched a three-run homer to break the game open. Schmeltzer also hit a three-run home run in the first inning for the Saints.

Magister also doubled in the nightcap while Moran went 2 for 3 and scored three runs. Patterson and junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) each collected two hits. Junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) doubled.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fell to 7-2 on the season with the Game Two setback. Herringshaw pitched into the sixth and allowed seven earned runs. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Freshman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched two innings of relief and fanned three.

Butler went 2 for 3 in the opener for Grove City, which had eight hits in the game. Junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and freshman outfielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) both doubled.

Freshman pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and took the defeat for Grove City. He allowed four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Juniors Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) all pitched in relief. Silk pitched 3 1/3 innings while Klimek tossed 1 1/3. Hasek pitched the seventh.

Grove City will host Thomas More Saturday at 11 a.m. in the final game of the three-game series at R. Jack Behringer Field.
