W&J tops Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 8-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Friday afternoon as visiting Washington & Jefferson (26-6, 12-1) earned a 19-6 win over Grove City (15-15) at R. Jack Behringer Field in conference action.

W&J, the top-ranked team in the NCAA's Mideast Region, broke Friday's game open by scoring six runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) belted a solo home run in the game, his 22nd career round-tripper. He is one home run behind Nate Kauffman (1998-2001) on Grove City's all-time home run list.

Junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) tripled and singled for Grove City and senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) went 2 for 5.

Freshman pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) took the defeat after allowing six runs in two-plus innings. Junior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, as did freshman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale). Juniors Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) and Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) both pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit W&J Saturday for a conference doubleheader at 12 p.m. at Ross Memorial Park.
