Wolverines earn split at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 9-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon by earning a doubleheader split with Washington & Jefferson at Ross Memorial Park. Grove City dropped the opener 17-8 but charged back in Game Two to earn an 11-8 triumph.

Grove City trailed 6-5 entering the sixth inning of the nightcap but stormed ahead with a five-run rally. The Wolverines tied the game on a run-scoring single by junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and then pulled ahead to stay when junior shortstop Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) ripped a two-run double.

Freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) followed with a run-scoring double and junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) capped the inning by driving in Patterson with a single to left.

In the top of the seventh, freshman right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) homered to center to give Grove City an 11-6 lead. W&J closed to within 11-8 in the bottom of the seventh but winning pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) worked out of the jam.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled as part of a 3 for 4 outing for Grove City while Quirk went 3 for 3 with three runs batted in. Patterson and Desrosiers both doubled and singled while Sacks singled in addition to his home run.

Herringshaw earned the win after allowing one earned run in three innings of relief. Junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and pitched four innings. Metcalf yielded six runs and nine hits.

In the opener, Grove City forged a 6-6 tie in the top of the fourth as Kriger roped a two-run single. However, W&J (27-7, 13-2) broke the game open by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Kriger went 3 for 4 with a double while junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) doubled twice. Magister and sophomore second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) both doubled in Game One.

Freshman pitcher Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) made his first collegiate start and took the setback for the Wolverines. Butler allowed six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), junior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and junior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) all pitched in relief. Seelman allowed one run in two innings.

Grove City will visit Bethany Friday at 3 p.m. in a single PAC game at Bethany Park.
