Thomas More tops Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 6-2 setback against No. 2 seed Thomas More at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park. The third-seeded Wolverines (18-18) will face either Washington & Jefferson or Westminster Friday at 3 p.m. in a loser's bracket game.

Junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) opened the inning with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Thomas More pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fifth as three Grove City errors led to two unearned runs. Grove City answered in the top of the sixth as Patterson tripled and came in on a single from freshman third baseman Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover).

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a complete game for Grove City. Herringshaw allowed two earned runs and struck out five in eight innings. He walked one and scattered 10 hits. Herringshaw is now 9-4.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 4 for Grove City while Desrosiers and senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) both doubled. Thompson and Desrosiers both finished 2 for 4.
