Grove City sweeps OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the northern portion of the 2011 schedule Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan. The Wolverines earned a 10-5 win in the opener and then secured a 5-2 victory in Game Two. The second game lasted just five innings due to darkness.

Grove City collected 13 hits in the opener as five players produced multi-hit outings. Sophomore catcher Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) paced the Wolverines by going 3 for 4 with a homer and two doubles. He drove in three runs and scored twice.

Senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Albany, N.Y./Schuylerville) doubled and singled for the Wolverines. Senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian), senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) all went 2 for 4. Junior third baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled.

Senior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned the win after allowing five runs in five innings. Senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) each pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Patterson went 2 for 3 in the nightcap to help Grove City complete the sweep. He is now hitting .529 for the season. Butler started and pitched a predetermined three innings. He yielded one run and earned the win. Senior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) pitched 2/3 of an inning and senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) recorded the final four outs for his first collegiate save.

Grove City (2-5) will visit Otterbein March 12 in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
