Wolverines top Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 6-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon by pulling out a 9-6 victory over host Thiel at Tomcat Park.

Four different Grove City players collected at least three hits as the Wolverines accumulated 18 hits in the win. Sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) helped pace Grove City (11-9 overall) by going 4 for 6.

Senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and senior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) all collected three hits each. Kriger, Patterson, Sacks and senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) all drove in two runs apiece.

Senior pitcher Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned the victory after allowing just three runs (two earned) and six hits over seven innings. Silk struck out five and walked just one.

Senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), sophomore Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and senior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) all pitched in relief. Stombaugh recorded the final two outs to pick up his first save of the season.

Moran gave Grove City a 2-0 lead in the second inning by lacing a two-run single. He then score the Wolverines' third run of the inning on a Patterson single.

Grove City extended its lead to 6-2 in the third on run-scoring singles from Kriger and Sacks and a sacrifice fly from senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville).

Thiel pulled to within 7-5 in the eighth but Grove City doubled the lead in ninth on run-scoring singles by Kriger and Sacks.

The win gives Grove City the 2-1 season series victory between the teams. Stombaugh is the fifth different Wolverine pitcher to record a save this year.

Grove City will host PAC foe Washington & Jefferson Friday at 4 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
