Grove City earns split

STRUTHERS, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Bethany Sunday afternoon at Bob Cene Park. Grove City (12-11, 7-4 PAC) earned a 14-8 win in Game One but Bethany pulled out a 4-3 win in Game Two.

Grove City took command of the opener by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both belted two-run homers in the inning, helping the Wolverines erase an early 3-0 deficit.

Bethany tied the game in the top of the second but Grove City took the lead for good in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring double from senior DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Bethany pulled to within 9-8 in the fifth but Grove City put away the game with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Moran cracked a run-scoring double in the sixth while doubles from freshman first baseman Ryan Parker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and senior Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) highlighted the sixth inning.

Moran finished Game One 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Kriger also singled while senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) tripled. Seven of Grove City's 12 hits went for extra bases.

Senior pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned his fifth win of the season by pitching five innings. He yielded three earned runs and 11 hits while striking out four. Senior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) pitched two scoreless innings to record his second save of 2011.

Magister hit a solo homer in Game Two while freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) doubled twice. Quirk tripled and scored two runs.

Sophomore pitcher Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started for Grove City and allowed four runs in five innings. Sophomore Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson Monday for a conference doubleheader at 4 p.m.
