Wolverines split twinbill at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 8-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday evening by splitting a conference doubleheader at Washington & Jefferson's Ross Memorial Park. W&J won the opener 11-7 but Grove City (13-12 overall) rebounded for a 10-5 triumph in Game Two.

Grove City collected 13 hits in the nightcap as eight of the nine starters had at least one hit. The Wolverines broke open the game with a six-run second inning and then added an insurance run in the seventh to help put away the game.

The Wolverines grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first when senior DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) cracked a three-run homer to center field.

In the second, Grove City pushed the lead to 5-0 when senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) worked a bases-loaded walk and freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) hit a sacrifice fly. The lead swelled to 7-0 on a two-run single from freshman first baseman Ryan Parker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston).

Sophomore catcher Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) closed the rally with a two-run homer, his second round-tripper of the year.

Parker scored Grove City's 10th run when he came home on a seventh-inning single by senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). Parker went 3 for 4 while Wells also doubled. Kriger and sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) both had two hits. Moran scored twice.

Senior pitcher Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) made his first start of the season and picked up the win after allowing five runs in four-plus innings. Sophomore Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded his second save of 2011 after pitching three scoreless innings of relief.

Kriger launched a grand slam in the top of the second to give Grove City a 4-3 lead in the opener but W&J rebounded with four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.

Sacks and senior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) both went 2 for 3 in Game One. Senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled and freshman Evan Hoskinson (Uniontown, Ohio/Green) added a two-run double in the seventh.

Senior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and took the setback for the Wolverines. Klimek pitched 1 1/3 innings. Senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), senior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) and junior Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) all pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit Waynesburg Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
