Another split for Wolverines

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- For the third time in four days, the Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Wolverines went 1-1 at Waynesburg Wednesday afternoon. Grove City (14-13, 9-6 PAC) won Game One against the Yellow Jackets 2-0 but Waynesburg pulled out a 6-5 win in Game Two at Madison Field.

In Game One, senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) fired a five-hit shutout in earning his third win of 2011. Silk struck out eight and did not walk a batter in seven innings.

Grove City scored both runs in the top of the second. Senior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) led off with a double and eventually scored on a groundout by senior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville).

The Wolverines then doubled the lead when senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled in freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).

Kriger, Hawley and senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) all went 2 for 3 in the win.

Five of Grove City's eight hits in Game Two went for extra bases but the Wolverines could not rally from an early 5-0 deficit. Grove City pulled to within 5-2 in the top of the fourth when Magister and Hawley both doubled. Hawley's double scored freshman first baseman Ryan Parker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston, who had reached on an error.

The Wolverines then posted three runs in the top of the seventh as doubles by Kriger and sophomore catcher Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) ignited the inning. Senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) singled in Wells, cutting the lead to 6-3.

Kriger came home on a groundout by sophomore pinch hitter Zack Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) and Quirk scored on a grounder by senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian). Kriger doubled twice in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) pitched five innings and took the setback. He allowed six runs and fanned five. Senior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) retired the side in the sixth.

Grove City split a doubleheader with Bethany Sunday and then split a twinbill at Washington & Jefferson Monday. The Wolverines will conclude the week Thursday with a conference doubleheader against Thomas More. The games are set for Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio, and the doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
