Wolverines fall to Thiel in series opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to visiting Thiel Friday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at R. Jack Behringer Field. Thiel scored three times in the top of the eighth and added two insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win.

Grove City trailed 4-2 after the top of the fifth but forged a 4-4 tie by the end of the sixth inning. In the fifth, junior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) reached on an error and later scored on a single by junior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale).

The Wolverines tied the game in the sixth when two-out single from sophomore DH Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) scored sophomore shortstop Matt Corner (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock).

Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Sacks singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout from junior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman). In the third, Shock drove in Hawley with a sacrifice fly.

Freshman third baseman J.R. Willard (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) went 2 for 4 for Grove City.

Freshman pitcher Will Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) started and pitched 6 1/3 innings for Grove City. He allowed three earned runs and struck out four. Freshman Tom Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief and took the setback.

Grove City will visit Thiel Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
