Grove City falls in 10

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 12-11, 10-inning decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Saint Vincent Friday afternoon at Bearcat Field. Grove City led 11-1 in the fifth inning but Saint Vincent charged back with an eight-run sixth. The Bearcats scored once in the seventh, tied the game in the ninth and then won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Junior DH Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) paced Grove City's 16-hit attack by going 4 for 6 with three runs batted in. Junior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) went 3 for 5 while sophomore shortstop Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) and freshman first baseman J.R. Willard (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) both doubled and singled.

Sophomore second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) collected a pair of hits and sophomore catcher Evan Hoskinson (Uniontown, Ohio/Green) doubled.

Struharik helped Grove City take a 3-0 lead in the first inning by roping a two-run single. After Saint Vincent trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the first, the Wolverines pushed the lead to 7-1 in the third. Struharik and Rende both had run-scoring singles and Hoskinson capped the inning with a two-run double.

Grove City added four more runs in the fifth as two Saint Vincent errors helped key the inning.

Freshman pitcher Will Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) started for Grove City and pitched 5 1/3 innings. Chaney allowed six hits and seven runs. Freshman Lee Coppock (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School), freshman Blaine Lang (Canfield, Ohio/Ursuline) and senior Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) all pitched in relief. Krull pitched 1 1/3 innings but took the setback.

Grove City (6-28, 4-18) will wrap up the 2012 season Saturday by hosting Saint Vincent in a league doubleheader at 1 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
