Grove City drops two

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the northern portion of the 2013 schedule Saturday afternoon by dropping a non-conference doubleheader at La Roche. The Redhawks earned a 5-0 win in Game One and then pulled out a 5-2 victory over Grove City in Game Two.

In the opener, three Wolverine errors helped lead to all five La Roche runs. Junior starter Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) struck out five in a complete-game effort but took the setback. He yielded eight hits and two walks in six innings.

Senior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) doubled for Grove City. The Wolverines had just four hits in the opener.

In Game Two, Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice by junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and came home when senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) laced a single.

La Roche tied the game in the bottom of the first but Grove City reclaimed the lead in the third when senior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) singled and later scored on a base hit from senior DH Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City).

La Roche again tied the game in the bottom of the third and then took the lead by scoring three unearned runs in the sixth.

Sophomore Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) started and allowed two earned runs in three innings. Senior Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) pitched the final three innings and allowed no earned runs. Vickerman took the defeat, however.

Grove City (1-5) will visit Pitt-Greensburg Monday in non-conference action.
