Grove City drops conference opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday afternoon by sustaining an 8-2 setback at Westminster. Westminster jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and then added three more runs in the seventh.

Grove City (1-6, 0-1 PAC) broke through in the eighth inning when senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) cracked a two-run homer that also scored junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic).

Senior pitcher Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and pitched seven innings for Grove City. He allowed five earned runs and 10 hits. Senior Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

Westminster's Scott Hanicak limited Grove City to five hits over nine innings.

Grove City will host conference foe Washington & Jefferson Friday at 3 p.m. in the 2013 home opener at R. Jack Behringer Field.
