W&J tops Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon to host Washington & Jefferson at Ross Memorial Park. Grove City dropped the opener 11-4. W&J then captured a 14-2 victory in Game Two.

In Game One, Grove City trailed 5-2 entering the fifth inning but slashed the lead to 5-4 by scoring twice. Freshman shortstop J.R. Mountain (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) opened the inning with a double and later scored on an error. Later in the inning, freshman right fielder Kenny McCracken (Wheaton, Ill./Aurora Christian) singled in senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), cutting the lead to 5-4.

W&J (13-5, 10-1) broke open the game with six unearned runs in the sixth, however.

Sophomore DH J.R. Willard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) put Grove City on the board in the top of the second with a solo homer, his first of the season. Willard finished the game 3 for 4.

Sophomore pitcher Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) started and allowed four earned runs in four innings. He absorbed the defeat. Sophomore Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) pitched a scoreless fifth and freshman Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) threw the sixth inning.

Mountain tripled, singled and scored both Grove City runs in the nightcap while junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) collected three hits in four at bats.

Freshman pitcher Scott Williams (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) started and allowed five earned runs in four innings. Curran, McCracken and freshman Drew Chorey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) all pitched in relief.

Grove City (1-9, 0-4) will visit Geneva Monday for a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
