Grove City blanks Geneva, 11-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned its second straight victory by rolling to an 11-0 win over visiting Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at R. Jack Behringer Field Monday afternoon.

Senior pitcher Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) yielded just six singles over nine innings in recording the shutout victory. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. It is his first career shutout and the first for Grove City since a 5-0 win over Neumann May 22, 2011 in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Championship Tournament.

Offensively, six Grove City players posted multi-hit outings Monday. Senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) went 3 for 5 with a double to help pace the Wolverines' 16-hit attack. Meanwhile, freshman DH Kenny McCracken (Wheaton, Ill./Aurora Christian) collected three singles, scored three times and knocked in three runs.

Senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) and junior third baseman Matt Corner (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) both doubled and singled while junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and senior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) each had a pair of hits. Corner and Jones both drove in a pair of runs. Senior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added a double.

Grove City scored twice in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Wolverines extended the lead to 8-0 in the sixth inning and added three more runs in the seventh.

It is Grove City's largest margin of victory in a conference shutout since a 14-0 win over Westminster April 15, 2004. Geneva dropped to 10-17 overall and 5-10 in the league.

The Wolverines (3-13, 2-8 PAC) will visit Saint Vincent Wednesday for a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
