Grove City closes home schedule with split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team wrapped up its home schedule Saturday by splitting a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg at R. Jack Behringer Field. Waynesburg (20-18, 11-13 PAC) took the opener 7-2 but Grove City rebounded for a 3-0 victory in Game Two.

Senior pitcher Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) fired his first collegiate shutout in Game Two as he yielded just seven hits in seven innings. Butler struck out three and walked just one while earning his third win of the season.

Grove City scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Senior DH Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) ignited the inning with a one-out double. Freshman Sam Quatrini (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) pinch-ran for Wells and moved to third on a groundout. Quatrini then scored the first run on a single by freshman shortstop J.R. Mountain (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane).

Junior third baseman Matt Corner (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) followed with a walk. Mountain and Corner both scored when senior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) laced a two-run triple.

Wells went 2 for 3 and senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) doubled. Grove City had just five hits in the win.

In Game One, Grove City left 11 men on base. Corner and Jones both had run-scoring singles in the bottom of the sixth but Grove City could get no closer. Jones finished 2 for 3.

Senior pitcher Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) started and pitched six innings. He allowed seven runs on nine hits and took the defeat. Freshman Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.

Grove City will lose eight seniors to graduation: Butler, Herald, Jones, center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian), first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale), left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman), Vickerman and Wells.
