Titans nip Wolverines, 54-52

NEW WILMINGTON, PA, January 27, 2001--Despite holding the league's top-ranked offense to just 30% shooting (17-56), Grove City fell to 11-7 overall Saturday, losing by a narrow 54-52 margin at Westminster, who improved to 13-6.

The Wolverines led 25-20 at halftime and opened up a nine-point lead, 34-25, with 14:19 left to play.  Grove City held at least a five-point edge over the next five minutes before Westminster went on an 11-3 run to lead 45-43 at the 6:24 mark.  Sophomore Jeb Schreiber (Oil City, PA/Oil City) layed in two of his team-high 13 points to tie the game, 45-45, and freshman Jim Fetzner (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) nailed a pair of free throws a minute later to put the Wolverines ahead 47-45.  After Westminster tied the game with two from the stripe, sophomore Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) hit a jumper at 3:34 to give Grove City its last lead, 49-47.  The Titans used a 6-0 run to go up 53-49 before senior Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) drilled a three-pointer to make it 53-52.  Westminster closed the scoring by making one of two freebies with four seconds left.

Fetzner finished with 11 points, hitting three from behind the arc.  Meling sank two threes and finished with eight points and a team-best eight boards.  Junior Dan Quinn (Uniontown, OH/Green) added nine points.

Grove City was held to 35% shooting, including a 9-for-27 (33.3%) clip in the second half.  Westminster, who hit just 7 of 29 (24.1%) from the floor in the first half, entered the game shooting a conference-high 49%.
