Wolverines rally past Waynesburg, 67-61

GROVE CITY, PA, January 31, 2001--Grove City held the nation's sixth-highest scoring team 27 points below its average and moved into a first-place tie in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 67-61 win over visiting Waynesburg Wednesday night.  The Wolverines improved to 12-7 overall and 3-1 in the PAC, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 11-7, 1-3 in the league.

Sophomore Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) scored a game-high 20 points and senior Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery) added 19 as the Wolverines used a 19-3 run midway through the second half to rally from an eight-point deficit.  Grove City led by as many as 11 points in the first half before taking a 30-27 lead into intermission.

Junior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion) put on a clinic underneath, grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds, including nine in the offensive zone that led to nine points.  Roberts added 11 points, five assists and three blocked shots.

Waynesburg was led by Rob Strcula's 17 points.

The Wolverines came into the game ranked 10th in the nation in scoring defense (62.2 ppg) and 13th in field-goal percentage defense (38.9%).

Grove City out-shot the Yellow Jackets, 46% to 34%. 

At night's end, the Wolverines found themselves tied for first place in the PAC with Bethany (3-1) and Thiel (3-1).  The Tomcats handed the Bison their first league loss Wednesday, 80-68.  Grove City will tip-off at Bethany Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
