Behrend deals Wolverines first defeat

ERIE, PA, November 20, 2001--A six-point lead slipped away in the final minutes Tuesday night as the Grove City Wolverines suffered their first loss of the season at Penn State Behrend, 56-53.

Grove City (2-1) trailed at halftime, 35-31, and fell behind by as many as eight points, 43-35, before going on an 18-4 run to take a 53-47 lead with 3:25 remaining.  But the Wolverines wouldn't score again as Behrend (2-1) took advantage of three GCC turnovers and rallied to score seven unanswered points to grab the lead for good, 54-53, with 2:33 left.

Junior Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, OH/Canfield) copped high-point honors for the second game in a row, firing in 17 points, including 15 in the first half.  Junior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) had a perfect night from the floor (5-5) and finished with 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Wolverines shot a season-high 57.1% from the field (20-35) and held the Lions to 42.1% shooting (16-38).  Behrend won the game at the line, hitting 19 of 24 free throws (79.2%).  Grove City was 11 of 17 from the stripe.

Grove City was seeking its first 3-0 start since 1982 when it opened with nine straight victories.

The game was played at Behrend's brand new Junker Center.
