Wolverines advance to tourney title game

GROVE CITY, PA, December 28, 2001--The Grove City College Wolverines (7-3) will play for their own tournament championship against last year's NCAA Division III runner-up after beating Penn State Altoona College (0-8) in the first round of the Howard Johnson Holiday Classic, 75-64, Friday night.

The Wolverines will tip-off in the championship game Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against William Paterson University (NJ), who advanced by beating Adrian College (MI), 70-60.  The Pioneers went 26-5 last year, falling in the NCAA finals to Catholic University, 76-62.

Sophomore Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood) sparked the win with his second straight double-double, collecting a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Sophomore Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) tossed in 12 points, hitting 6 of 6 shots from the floor, while senior Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) chipped in with 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting and added nine boards.  Sophomore Ian Dean (Damascus, MD/Damascus) contributed six assists.

Grove City outshot Penn State Altoona, 61% to 46%, and held a decisive 35-17 edge on the glass..

The Wolverines led 29-25 at halftime before the Cougars rallied to take a 33-31 lead at the 17-minute mark.  The game was tied, 38-38, with 13:55 left, but Grove City went on a 12-2 run and held at least a seven-point cushion the rest of the way.

Penn State Altoona was led by Eric Goodson's 19 points.
