Bethany pulls out double-overtime win over Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa.  --  Matt Drahos' buzzer-beating lay-in at the end of the second overtime gave visiting Bethany a 102-100 victory over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Grove City College Arena.

Drahos received an outlet pass after a Grove City turnover in the frontcourt and scored the close-range basket as the horn sounded, knocking Grove City's record to 13-7 overall, 4-2 in the PAC.

Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) tied a career high with 39 points. Maurer also scored 39 in the Wolverines' 77-71 win at Bethany Jan. 18.

The Wolverines shot 65 percent (39-for-60) from the floor in the game, including 10 of 13 in overtime.

Grove City led by as many as 12 in the first half as eight straight points from J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) gave the Wolverines a 25-13 lead. However, Bethany roared back to grab a 39-31 lead with 3:38 remaining in the first half. However, Grove City tied the game at 43 at the end of the half as Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) buried his first career three-pointer as time expired.

The Wolverines took control of the game in the second half with a 16-4 run. Maurer started the run with an inside basket while Collar followed with a three. Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) , who finished with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, added consecutive field goals to cap the run. However, Bethany (9-11, 2-4 PAC) tied the game at 77-77 on a driving basket from Mike Majzun, who joined Drahos with a team-high 20 points.

Collar's potential game-winning shot spun out at the end of regulation.

In the first overtime, Bethany jumped out to an 83-79 lead but baskets from Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) and Prosser tied the game. With the game still tied at 89, Maurer could not get his potential game-winner to fall, forcing the second overtime.

Bushre finished with 15 points while Maurer added eight assists and seven rebounds. Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) gave out nine assists while Prosser had five assists.

All five Bethany starters scored in double figures. In addition to Majzun and Drahos, Derek Hoffman scored 18, Josh Polantz tossed in 14 and Jacob Dailer added 13 points.
