Wolverines down Titans, stay atop conference
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Visiting Grove City held Westminster to 29.8 percent shooting from the floor (17-for-57) Wednesday night as the Wolverines improved to 5-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 60-53 win at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in men's basketball action.
Grove City (14-7), which is tied with Waynesburg for first in the PAC, received 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists from sophomore Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) while senior Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) tossed in 11 points, all in the first half.
Vlajkovich's first-half outburst allowed Grove City to grab a 28-12 lead with 6:17 left. A Vlajkovich jumper capped a 10-2 run that gave the Wolverines their 16-point bulge.
The Wolverines opened the game on an 8-0 tear, highlighted by a two-hand dunk from Maurer. However, Westminster climbed back into the game as forward Pat O'Connor drainer three consecutive three-pointers and Chris Hatch hit a jumper, trimming Grove City's lead to 34-26 by halftime.
Westminster (9-13, 3-4 PAC) cut the lead to five on three different occasions in the second half but could get no closer. The Titans shot just 8 for 30 (26.7 percent) in the second half.
Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) collected a team-high eight rebounds and also had five assists while Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had four steals. O'Connor led Westminster with 12 points.
