Wolverines run past Waynesburg on Senior Night

GROVE CITY, Pa.  --  Sophomore Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) fired in 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Wednesday night as the Grove City College men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season home schedule with an 89-74 victory over visiting Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

A 14-3 run during the middle portion of the first half gave Grove City a 34-21. Matt Phillips (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston), who scored a career-high nine points, started the run with an inside basket while Maurer and J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) both drilled three-pointers. Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) added a deuce while a Maurer layup capped the run.

Later in the half, Grove City pushed the lead to 18 with an 11-2 burst, highlighted by a pair of baskets from senior guard Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and three Phillips foul shots, helping Grove City hold a 45-31 halftime lead.

The Wolverines (15-8, 6-3 PAC) then opened the second half with an 11-0 run that featured a Maurer dunk and Phil Bushre's (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) three-point play.

Waynesburg (16-7, 6-3 PAC) managed to cut Grove City's 25-point lead down to nine with 2:38 left on consecutive scores from Ray Robinson, who led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points. However, another three-point play from Bushre and a three from Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) sealed the win for Grove City.

Prosser finished with a near triple-double, collecting 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while Bushre added 10 points, seven boards and five assists. Maurer is now seventh on Grove City's single-season scoring list with 465 points. It was his fifth game of 30 or more points this season.

Prior to the game, seniors Vlajkovich, Geoff Gehring (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and Jeb Schreiber (Enon, Ohio/Oil City, Pa.) were honored for their years in the Wolverine program.
