Grove City caps regular season with 20-point triumph

WASHINGTON, Pa.  --  Senior Andy Vlajkovich (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) rifled in 21 of his season-high 23 points in the first half to help the Grove City College men's basketball team (16-8, 7-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference) roll past host Washington and Jefferson 86-66 at the Henry Memorial Center Saturday afternoon in both teams' regular-season finales.

The Wolverines will be the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC tournament by virtue of the victory. Grove City will host a semifinal Thursday evening against an undetermined opponent.

Grove City slammed the door on the Presidents (6-18, 3-7 PAC) with a 15-4 run in the second half that turned a 43-38 lead into a 16-point bulge. A jumper and then a three-point play from Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Linsly School) started the run while Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) scored four straight Wolverine points. After Vlajkovich drained a pull-up jumper, Eller added another basket to give Grove City a 58-42 lead with 12:19 left.

Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) added 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, a trio of blocks and three steals for Grove City while Maurer finished with 17 points. Maurer, a 6-foot-6 swingman, now has 482 points this season, the sixth-highest single-season point total in Grove City history. Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had six of Grove City's 20 assists.

Grove City shot 32-for-61 (52.5 percent) from the floor and out-rebounded the Presidents 44-22. The Wolverines had 17 offensive rebounds while W&J collected just 13 defensive rebounds.

President guard Nolan Larry led all scorers with 30 points. W&J shot just 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the floor.
