Wolverines fall to CMU in West Penn Classic

GROVE CITY, Pa.  -- The Grove City College men's basketball team sustained its worst opening-night loss since 1991 as the Wolverines dropped a 79-62 decision to Carnegie Mellon in the first night of the West Penn Classic at the Grove City College Arena.

The Tartans (1-0) out-scored Grove City 49-28 in the second half and forced 22 Wolverine turnovers.

Carnegie Mellon also out-rebounded Grove City, the nation's second-ranked team in rebound margin last year, by a 45-33 margin. Grove City also went just 17-for-33 (51.5 percent) at the foul line.

Senior forward Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) led Grove City with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double while center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) added a dozen points. Junior guard J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) added 10 points in his first career start.

Junior Michael Divens led CMU with 15 points off the bench while Matt Kaitz added 14. 

In Friday night's first game, Washington and Jefferson knocked off Allegheny, 88-78, behind 22 points from junior forward Steve Button. John Koch added 15 for the Presidents. Matt Majzlik led Allegheny (0-1) with 26 points while Matt Magnusen fired in 25.

Grove City plays Allegheny Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the second night of the West Penn Classic at Carnegie Mellon. The second-night matchups were predetermined.
