Wolverines fall to Muskingum 

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Despite 20 points from junior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) and a dozen points from junior point guard Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), the Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 61-57 decision to visiting Muskingum Monday night in the opening night of the 2003 Howard Johnson Holiday Classic at the Grove City College Arena.

The Wolverines (3-5) shot 59 percent (23 of 39) from the floor but Muskingum (6-4) turned 17 Grove City turnovers into 25 points.

Grove City out-rebounded the Muskies 25-22 but forced only nine turnovers. Junior guard J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) added 10 points while sophomore forward Chuck Cotherman (Knox, Pa./Keystone) added a team-high seven rebounds in his first career start.

Zach Ross led Muskingum with 17 points. Grove City will play Mount Union at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the second day of action. Muskingum plays Messiah at 1 p.m. The matchups are predetermined.

Mount Union downed Messiah, 81-74, in the first game Monday night. Junior guard Brad Gerard led the Purple Raiders (7-3) with 20 points, including 6-of-8 accuracy on three-point attempts. Femi Akinnagbe led Messiah with 14 points while David Henninger had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mount Union broke the game open with a 25-1 run in the first half, then held off a late charge from Messiah.
