Wolverines topple unbeaten Titans

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) fired in a career-high 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting while senior forward Tanner Prosser (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) added 18 points and tied a career high with 19 rebounds in leading the Grove City College men's basketball team to a 100-95 victory over Westminster (11-11, 6-1 PAC) Wednesday night at the Grove City College Arena in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

It is Westminster's first PAC loss of the season. Grove City improves to 10-12 overall, 4-3 in the conference. Wednesday night's 100-point outing represents the first time Grove City scored in triple-digits in a regulation game since the 1994 regular season finale against Waynesburg, a 110-76 win.

Grove City limited Westminster to 19 of 68 (28 percent) shooting beyond the arc and also out-rebounded the Titans, 49-37.

Neither team led by more than six points throughout the second half but Grove City managed to hold the lead for the final 5:43 of the game. Down the stretch, Grove City made nine straight free throws to seal the win. The Wolverines made 16 of 19 free throws in the second half and went 21-of-28 in the game. Westminster went just 8-for-10.

The game featured 23 lead changes and 13 ties.

Phillips fired in 18 of his points during the first half as the teams were tied 50-50 at halftime. A baseline jumper from junior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) with three seconds left in the half tied the game at 50. Eller finished with 20 points.

Prosser also had five assists for Grove City while junior point guard Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) produced a near-triple-double with eight points, nine rebounds and nine assists. As a team, Grove City had 25 assists and shots 58 percent (37 of 64) from the floor.

Pat O'Connor led Westminster with 26 points, including seven three-pointers, while Ed Pagley added 18. Dom Joseph chipped in 14 points, nine boards and seven assists for the Titans.

Prosser moved into 10th place on Grove City's all-time scoring list. He now has 1,187 career points and needs just six to move past Bill Fox (1975-79) for ninth place.

Grove City will visit Thiel Saturday at 3 p.m. in PAC action.
