Bushre's career night sparks Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) poured in a career-high 25 points and added eight rebounds Tuesday night as the Grove City College men's basketball team (4-0) held off visiting La Roche, 78-68, in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

It is Grove City's eighth straight regular-season win dating back to last season. It is Grove City's longest regular season win streak since closing the 1990-91 season with 11 straight wins.

Grove City broke the game open with a 20-0 run in the first half that gave the Wolverines a 29-8 lead. The first 18 points of the run came on six straight three-point goals. Senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) drained the final three three-pointers and finished with 15 points. The Wolverines led 44-26 at the half and extended the lead to 24, 50-26, early in the second half on an inside basket from junior swingman Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston).

La Roche (0-2) chipped away at the Grove City lead and pulled to within 57-50 with five minutes left on a three-pointer by Demetris Pringle. Pringle led all scorers with 26 points. However, Bushre scored Grove City's final five points down the stretch, sealing the win.

Grove City shot 9 of 15 (60 percent) beyond the three-point line and was 28 for 51 (55 percent) from the floor overall. Phillips had a team-high four assists while sophomore guard Bobby Glass (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) drained three three-pointers and finished with nine points.
