Wolverines maintain hold of first place
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday night with a 67-54 home win over PAC rival Washington and Jefferson at the Grove City College Arena.
It is Grove City's fifth straight win overall and the Wolverines' ninth straight win over Washington and Jefferson. Grove City keeps sole possession of first place in the PAC with the win.
Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) tossed in 15 points and added eight rebounds while senior guard J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) added 15 points, including three three-point goals. Senior point guard Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) chipped in 11 points and four assists while committing no turnovers.
Grove City closed the first half with an 8-0 run in the final minute. Senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) started the flurry with a lay-up while Collar drained a three-pointer after a turnover, giving Grove City the lead for good at 27-26. Another Collar three with 27 seconds left gave Grove City a 30-26 halftime lead.
The Presidents (4-13, 1-2 PAC) closed to within two, 43-41, with 12:22 left but consecutive threes from Grove City freshman Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) broke the game open.
The Wolverines shot 62 percent (13 of 21) from the floor in the second half and finished the game 24 of 44 (55 percent) from the floor for the game. Grove City also held the Presidents to a 9-of-29 (31 percent) shooting effort in the second half.
Grove City owned a 34-27 edge on the glass and made 7 of 13 three-point attempts. Brandon Studer led Washington and Jefferson with 12 points. Grove City has defeated the Presidents 12 straight times at the Grove City College Arena.
It is the 99th career victory for Grove City head coach Steve Lamie (99-73). Monday's game was the 1,999th men's basketball game in College history. Grove City (1,111-888 all-time) will play its 2,000th intercollegiate game Wednesday night at home against Thiel.
