Five hit double figures in 93-79 triumph
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Five Grove City players scored in double figures Wednesday night as the Wolverines earned a 93-79 home win over Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City improved to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in the PAC with the victory.
Freshman guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) rifled in a career-high 21 points, including five three-pointers for the Wolverines. Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) posted a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double while senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) tossed in 12 points.
Senior guards Mike Lukcic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and J.D. Collar (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) each added 11 points. Lukcic shot 5-of-5 from the floor and also had five assists. Junior swingman Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) chipped in nine points and distributed a team-high six assists.
The Wolverines shot 31 of 51 (61 percent) from the floor for the game. Grove City also shot 9 of 14 (64 percent) beyond the three-point line.
Grove City scored the first 12 points of the game and led by as many as 21, 38-17, in the first half. After holding a 46-31 halftime lead, Grove City pushed the lead out to 27 on consecutive three-pointers by Carr. Waynesburg (8-14, 2-5 PAC) pulled to within nine in the final minute but the Wolverines hit five free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the win.
It is Grove City's eighth straight victory over Waynesburg. Jeff Nero and Jered Gamble each scored 20 points for the Yellow Jackets. Grove City out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets, 34-28. Combined with Grove City's 102 points at Westminster last Saturday, the two-game combined point total of 195 is Grove City's highest in 11 seasons.
The Wolverines visit Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon.
