Thiel tops Grove City

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Five Grove City College players scored in double figures Wednesday night but the Wolverines dropped a 75-70 decision to host Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.

Senior center Phil Bushre (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) posted a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double while sophomore forward Mark Smith (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and freshman guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) each chipped in 11 points.

Senior forward Ryan Eller (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) and junior swingman Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) each scored 10 points.

The Wolverines (13-10, 6-3 PAC) jumped out to a 13-5 lead but Thiel rallied and eventually took a 34-27 lead by halftime. Thiel (7-17, 3-6 PAC) led throughout the second half, warding off several Grove City comeback efforts.

Grove City out-rebounded Thiel 44-24 but the Tomcats forced 20 Grove City turnovers. The Tomcats also shot 47 percent (29 of 62) from the floor. Daryl Moore led Thiel with 23 points while Joe Herrmann and Brad Bowman both added 15.

Grove City hosts Bethany Saturday in the regular season finale. The Wolverines will be the second seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament while Bethany is the top seed in the tournament.
