Wolverines fall at CMU
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 0-2 Saturday night with an 80-64 loss at Carnegie Mellon in the second night of the 2005 West Penn Classic at Skibo Gymnasium.
CMU (2-0) closed the first half with an 11-3 run and led 38-30 at the break. The Tartans then pulled away in the second half.
Three Grove City players scored in double figures Saturday night. Sophomore guard Ryan Gerber (Baltic, Ohio/Garaway) led the Wolverines with 12 points, including 3-for-3 accuracy on three-point shots. Senior guard Matt Phillips (Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston) fired in 11 points while freshman guard Ryan Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) added 10. Gibson also had six assists.
Clayton Barlow-Wilcox, the Classic's MVP, led Carnegie Mellon with 18 points and 17 rebounds. CMU out-rebounded Grove City, 49-36. The Wolverines shot 7 of 13 (54 percent) beyond the arc.
Grove City returns to action Tuesday night at Penn State Altoona.
